Joe Neguse presses Park Service over removal of slavery photo

Colorado Rep. Joe Neguse pressed National Park Service Associate Director Michael Caldwell over reports that “The Scourged Back,” an iconic 1863 photograph showing the severe whipping scars of a formerly enslaved man, had been ordered removed from an exhibit at Georgia’s Fort Pulaski National Monument. The controversy arose amid the Trump administration’s review of national park materials that it said placed too much emphasis on “negative” aspects of American history.
