A Sturm’s a comin’ to Denver, and the whole family is invited to be there when it rolls in.
The Denver Museum of Nature & Science will host a free grand opening celebration on Sept. 1 to mark the unveiling of its new Sturm Family Wing, the culmination of a four-month renovation project made possible by the largest donation in the museum’s history.
The Sturm Family Wing will comprise three parts: the Sturm Family Plaza, Sturm Infinity Lobby, and Sturm Infinity Theater.
The theater is the centerpiece of the project. As an upgraded version of the existing IMAX theater, it will show a range of large-screen movies, beginning with Penguins: A Love Story 2D, which will premiere there on the night of the celebration for an additional fee.
“Together, this collection of thoughtfully reimagined spaces creates a place we invite you to make your own,” reads the museum’s website. “Whether you’re watching a documentary about dinosaurs, enjoying a world-renowned author discussion, sipping curated cocktails in the cosmos, designing a memorable hosted event and so much more, there’s room for it all.”
The construction project, which began in April, also included a complete revamping of the plaza outside the building’s East Wing. The Sturm Family Plaza provides a space for live music, outdoor dining from T.REX Cafe (next to an actual T-Rex skeleton), live science demos, and other activities. nd that’s just during the grand opening.
The Sept. 1 celebration will kick off a yearlong series of events curated for the new spaces, according to 9News.
The Sturm Family Foundation donated $20 million to the museum for the renovation of its East Wing in March 2025, according to Denverite, building on a $6 million donation in 2018 that led to the construction of the Sturm Grand Pavilion on the north side of the building.
The Sturm Family Wing Grand Opening will take place from 4-9 p.m. on Sept. 1 at 2001 Colorado Blvd. in Denver.
